Hanging With Friends

TOMOHUNG means ‘hanging with friends’, their vocalist, Dan, told us during their set that night, and that’s exactly what the whole Spill The T Tour has been about. Hanging with friends, performing with friends, and making new friends along the way. Nowhere was this more evident than on the Festival Edition of the tour at Greaser, where they had gathered the most friends together in terms of both bands and audience.
THE VICIOUS LAWLESS kick off the day by launching into their jugend flavoured raucous rock’n’roll. It may only be the band’s second show, but they are comprised of seasoned vets who know how to throw it down. Vocalist Karl stalks a path in front of the stage as the band, which has three guitarists, tears it up behind him. Speaking of guitars, I spy a Gibson Explorer, a Les Paul, and an SG to complete the catalogue. Add in a Thunderbird on bass, and you gotta wonder if they all went in together for a group discount. Too bad Gibson don’t make drums.
They are followed by THE BRADBURYS, a punk rock come comedy trio it seems, as their set is filled with as many off-colour jokes as it is songs. They say they’re a PUNKALITIOUS cover band, and stalking Facebook tells me they share members, so can you really call that a cover band? They do, however, play a punked-out cover of LCD Soundsystem’s ‘Daft Punk Are Playing at My House’ that gets the room jumping.

Touching on multiple genres such as blues, funk, reggae, and even country, THE DISGRUNTALED TAXPAYERS blast out a set that also carries a comedic narrative. They sing songs about having too many pies (impossible!), a song about road rage that also features a scat solo dedicated to anyone feeling sad (with a reminder to not feel too bad, because Peter Dutton lost his job last week), an ode to a poo jogger, and a little dity called ‘We All Fucked Your Mum’, just in time for Mothers Day. And that was just the first half of their set.
FLY AGARIC launch into harmony-filled alternative rock, featuring heavy riffs that are backed by bassy grooves. Throughout their set they also careen into psych jams that really kick in when they hit some truly soaring leads. It made me wish I had some Amanita Muscaria on me. Maybe I should go scope out their merch desk…

The heaviness continues with SEVEN DAY STORM. Huge vocals boom over the top of solid slabs of heavy rock as the band cranks through their songs. They have a new song and film clip coming out soon for a track called ‘Poorly Made’, but this is a slick outfit that definitely knows what it’s doing. Keep an eye out for it.
THE HEFTIES play hard and effect-laden punk rock, with phasers aplenty adding to both the atmosphere and thickness of their sound. Their Facebook bio says that the members all met on a camping trip, true story or not, you can see their friendship and camaraderie clearly on display. To add to the good vibes, they play a song called ‘Having A Good Time’ which they claim to have written specifically for this show. I call bullshit on that one. Great track though.

DEFIANT GROUND are the first full-fledged metal band of the day and they kick my arse accordingly. Their soft-spoken vocalists who, apart from the dreads, looks like they could be an accountant with their checked long sleeve shirt and glasses, but a soon as the riffs kick in he transforms into a monster. Harsh screams and gutterals pour forth, before the long sleeve is discarded to reveal that he’s ripped as a tweed couch in a house with five cats. The fuck bro?!?!
It’s hard not to smile while watching TAWNY HAWK, their vocalist has an infectiously mischievous gleam in his eye, and he backs it up with humorous banter with the crowd. Comedic anecdotes aside, they play some solid punk rock, announcing that they also have a new song primed and ready to drop called ‘Sleight Of Hand’. Speaking with their prolific bassist Rodney aka Godney aka Yendor after the set, he tells me that the song is about people who get handsy in the crowd, and that they should just fuck off. Hard agree.

Spill The T Tour masterminds TOMOHUNG hit the stage and the room is packed. It’s good to have friends, and even better when they show up to support. Vocalist Dan is visibly chuffed with a smile from ear to ear as they bust into their skate-inspired punk rock tunes. Introducing one of their tracks, Dan lets us know that this one is about himself and his addiction to iced coffees. It’s called Milk, and features the line ‘Where did I leave my milk today?’. They follow it up with new single ‘Had A Bad Day’ and I can’t help but wonder if it had something to with where, and for how long he left that milk out. Either way, no one here is having a bad day here. It’s been awesome, and there’s still one band to go.
That band is TILL YA DEAD, and we are all in for another solid arse-kicking. Savage riffs ring out, and the crowd gets primitive with it. The vocal attack is equally quick and vicious as their front-person gets up in everyone’s faces. It has been a long a day, but everyone has energy to exchange with the band as they are supercharged by their performance. There may not have actually been any T spilled, but I’d say there was a fair amount of sweat.
